Ph.D. Minor

Ph.D. Minor in Theory Theater Performance

Our Ph.D. Minor

Our Ph.D. Minor offers an interdisciplinary approach to theatre and performance as both practiced theory and theoretical practice. Our courses cover contemporary developments as well as the historical depth of theater and performance. They are offered by over 60 faculty members of our TTP group from more than 20 departments and allow you to gain a understanding of theater that spans from East-Asian theatrical traditions to avant-garde performance and street art.

Degree Requirements

You need to take a minimum of 12 credit hours in graduate courses, consisting of:

  • Core Course (GER-P500, 3 credit hours): This course introduces core theories and concepts in theatre and performance studies and introduces current methods for the analysis of theater and performance. If GER-P500 is not offered, the Director can approve another course that counts as an equivalent to GER-P500.
  • Special Topics in Theory Theater Performance: Nine credit hours can be earned by taking departmental courses (cross-listed as GER-P600 or approved by the Director).
  • Individual Readings in Theory Theater Performance: Students may take up to two individual reading courses (GER-P815) in theatre and performance with an advisor from the Theory Theater Performance working group or a qualified faculty member ad hoc approved by the Director of the working group.

The Qualifying Exams shall be administered by the main department of the student, but a faculty member of TTP or faculty approved by the TTP Director shall serve as a minor representative in the qualifying process.
